east - west

The EAST-WEST cycle was created during my stay on the US West Coast (2003) and in Ukraine (2004). When I went to the States, I did not have any concrete idea in mind. I travelled through California, Nevada and Arizona, trying to avoid the tumult of the big cities. I intuitively photographed the scenes I came across, and I believe they are the essence of the States – the limitless expanse and sense of timelessness. Six months later in Ukraine, I discovered similar pictures. I photographed places which reminded me of the American atmosphere, people in similar situations. I wanted to see to what extent these seemingly very distinct worlds, shown in a similar way, really differ.
